After a much needed relaxing visit with Barb, it was time to hit the road. Well, after my breakfast of left-over pork ribs, havarti cheese and Boudin sourdough bread (apparently it’s only available in the Bay Area so Barb picks it up whenever she’s there and I eat it every day when I’m at her house) I hit the road.
Barb is so sweet, she was offering me all kinds of goodies for the road but since I was stuffed, I turned her down. What was I thinking? I did leave with a baggie full of fruit which made me happy. I never turn down fresh fruit. I also got gas on my way out of town and since I was full, I didn’t load up on snacks, did I not learn my lesson? Almost as soon as I took off I was regretting that decision. Some Munchos or Funyons would have been wonderful and I hadn’t even had beef jerky on this road trip yet!
Because I hadn’t taken any pics I factored in time to stop for pics on my route. Unfortunately, there really wasn’t much to take photos of. The pic at the top of the page was a pretty good representation of my trip. Don’t worry, I didn’t look while taking this photo. I just snapped a bunch and hoped one turned out.
There was one great photo op about 75 miles outside of Reno. A gorgeous natural lake called Walker Lake. It’s 18 miles long and 7 miles wide. I stopped at the beginning of it. I almost stopped at the end because it was so glassy and still but I had just gotten back on the road, I wasn’t pulling off a few minutes later.
There were campgrounds all along the way but not too busy. Would be a wonderful place to commune with nature. The beach was called 20-mile beach. Talk about over exaggeration, it’s only 18 miles long.
It was a gorgeous day to be on the road, not for all of the bugs littering my windshield but for the rest of us, it was. Still a lot of one lane highway going towards Vegas from Reno which you know I don’t like. Sometimes it would take me 30 minutes to pass a truck, I have to absolutely be a hundred percent sure a car isn’t coming in the other direction and sometimes I can’t tell if it’s a road reflection I’m seeing or a car. Better safe than sorry.
I forgot to mention while driving thru Oregon I swerved at least 3 times to avoid chipmunks, those suckers are so small that I don’t know if it’s a leave or an animal. There were also birds just hanging out on the road and a couple that were diving in front of me. These animals really don’t know how close they were to losing their lives. Luckily, this drive was less eventful.
I didn’t really get too tired this trip, thanks to my book. I eventually called Sharon and Dao to keep me company but the reception was terrible all day. I tried to post pics and text people when I stopped to go to the bathroom but couldn’t get decent reception. Thank goodness for audiobooks because I couldn’t even listen to my music because freaking iTunes loves to put everything on the cloud, even tho I bought the songs. Now listening to HEAVEN, TX by Susan E Phillips, I’m thoroughly enjoying this trip down memory lane. Old books are like old friends, comforting and loved.
Not a lot of places to stop for bathroom breaks. If I end up needing to wear diapers in a few years, you can trace it back to this trip. I wait way too long to pee because I always want to multi-task stops. I did stop at one place, I can’t remember the name of it but it was like a mega gas station with aisles of candies and nuts as well as their own beef jerky. I didn’t get any jerky, I prefer the long flat slabs that are sold in gas stations. I did get an ice cream cone. Since I got that I didn’t get any chips. While paying for my soda I decided to ditch the cone, it wasn’t very good so why waste the calories but I didn’t want to get out of line to get a snack. I’m destined not to eat on this trip, LOL.
I told Dao I would make it to town between 5:30pm and 6pm. I got here at 5:20pm. There was nowhere to stop for food! I was hoping I could at least go thru the Strip so I could stop in the Paris casino and get my favorite apricot pastry before I got there but turns out I got to Dao’s house before then. No pastry for me, my laziness is really the only reason I’m not obese, LOL.
Dao and I worked together at a TV station back in 1995. She was the gorgeous on-air talent, I was not. The first day we met she asked me if I wanted to go for a run with her. I laughed in her face. A beautiful friendship was born.
This was us 5 minutes after I got to the house. We also lived in Atlanta at the same time, she was the reason I went to Atlanta for a visit which is where I got offered my job. Our lives have been connected for a long time and while we don’t see each other anywhere near enough, she’s one of my dearest friends. I’m having so much fun connecting with people on this trip, the hardest part is not getting to spend enough time with anyone or getting to see everyone.
